The Ultimate Guide to Shower Organization

We’ve compiled the ultimate guide of shower organization ideas to help you enjoy a bathroom free of clutter and germs.

Shower Organization Tips - The Ultimate Guide

A clean shower is a cleaner you. Every day multiple people use this space to cleanse and refresh themselves, but without proper cleaning and organization, it can get extremely unhygienic very quickly.

You also take up to two showers per day, so why not have a clean and tidy shower that you’ll enjoy every time? A shower is above all a place where you refresh; if it’s chaotic, you won’t be able to relax.

We’ve compiled the ultimate guide of shower organization ideas to help you enjoy a bathroom free of clutter and germs. After you’ve implemented these tips, we guarantee your shower routine will be much more optimized and enjoyable. If you have a pro shower organization tip of your own, share it in the comments below!

Rule #1 of Shower Organization: Start with Shampoo, Conditioner & Body Wash

Best Practice 1: If you buy shampoo and conditioners in bulk, don’t take up precious shower space by using the original bottles. Buy refillable plastic pump bottles that take up less space and are also nicer to look at. Remember, aesthetics do contribute to a sense of happiness and calm, so don’t understand the impact of these small aesthetic upgrades!

What to look for:
- BPA Free Plastic or silicone. Try to avoid glass that can slip and break in the shower.
- Easy to clean
- Highly rated (4 stars + on Amazon)

Here are some highly rated bottles that are BPA Free, highly rated on Amazon and easy to clean. Clear bottles go with every style of bathroom, and these are extremely durable. You will need to purchase waterproof labels to go with these.

Another option is to go with a liquid dispenser, but these are difficult to install (they require drilling - adhesives will NOT work) and are more difficult to clean than bottles.

Best Practice 2: Create designated spaces for each person who uses the shower. This is the one area of the house where zones (based on type of product) don’t make as much sense, since we all have preferences and different products. In our household we prefer to have our own designated space.

What to look for in space shelving:
- Drains on bottom to let moisture run
- Plastic - no rust, easier to clean

Easy ways to create separate spaces:
- Separate wall shelves
- Separate levels of a shower caddy
- Separate wall hooks for loofahs, scrubbers and towels
- Separate tooth brush or razor holders

Rule #2 of Shower Organization: Organize Shower Loofahs, Scrubbers and Towels

Best practice 1: Start with good hygiene

Loofahs, body scrubbers and towels can be breeding grounds for bacteria. Start with good hygiene practices for these items. A lot of people don’t realize just how much bacteria can build up on these items, but with these routine steps you can keep them clean.

- Clean it weekly. Soak it in a diluted bleach solution for at least 5 minutes, rinse thoroughly with water, then dry it completely before the next use.
- Replace your loofah every 3-4 weeks.  I find the easiest way to follow this rule is to stock up on loofahs (backstock!) and set a monthly reminder to throw away and replace.
- Dry it daily. Shake it thoroughly, wring it with a towel before you hang it. Ideally  you are hanging it in a cool place outside of your shower, away from moisture. But at the very least, hang it on the shower wall (not on a shelf) where it can dry.

Another more hygienic option is to use a washcloth instead of a loofah. Those can get thrown into the washer/dryer and tend to be easier to clean and dry.

Best practice 2: Use a wall hook

These are some great wall hook options that are damage free, but effectively use to hang and dry your loofahs and towels.
- Plastic 3M
- Stainless steel

Remember to keep your respective loofahs/clothes in your own designated space.

Rule #3 of Shower Organization: Leave Your Toothbrush, Razors and Face Wash Out of the Shower

Why the toothbrush? In general, brushing teeth in the shower is not recommended by dentists. The shower is generally filled with bacteria and that can get onto your toothbrush. However, the ADA says there isn’t any harm in shower brushing, as long as you do not leave your toothbrush in the shower! Not only can someone else’s products splash onto your toothbrush, but in general leaving it in the moist environment will breed bacterial growth.

Why razors? Razor blades tend to rust because of the humidity in your shower. Make it a habit to take your razor out of the shower, dry it with a towel and store it outside until you need it next.

Why face wash? Not only can the hot shower water dry out your skin, but many face wash tubes can capture moisture in the caps and grow mildew. Since your face is a sensitive area, it’s bes tto leave your face washing ritual out of the shower.

Here is my favorite portable suction cup holders that you can use to carry your razor and toothbrush in and out of the shower each time.

Overall, the key points to remember when organizing your shower are to get rid of the clutter, keep everything together in one place (in whatever way makes sense for you), and try different shower organization systems until you find what works best for you. With these tips in mind, our lives will be a whole lot easier—and cleaner!
